Pace Health Connection Provides Cervical Cancer Testing - Prevention and Early Detection are Key
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Cervical Cancer is highly preventable with regular screenings and can be cured if found in the early stages. Two tests available to detect cervical cancer are a pap test or a human papillomavirus (HPV) test. Pap testing checks for abnormal cell changes on the cervix while HPV testing checks for the high-risk types of HPV that are commonly found in cervical cancer.
In 2015, over 12,000 new cases of cervical cancer were reported with 4,000 fatalities. According to the CDC, 8 out of 100,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year, 2 of which will prove to be fatal. According to the CDC, HPV exposure is the most common cause cervical cancer.
Rebecca Skiver PA-C of Health Connection states, “Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a virus transmitted through intimate sexual contact. Most individuals are unaware they have contracted the virus and have a higher risk for developing genital warts or HPV-related cancers. The Gardasil vaccine has been developed to help protect from acquiring 9 types of HPV and was recently approved for use in men and women ages 9 - 45. Due to the decrease in HPV diseases from Gardasil use, we highly recommend this vaccine to eligible individuals.”
