What is a Health Insurance Navigator and Where Can I Find One?

A Health Insurance Navigator helps individuals to apply for health insurance through the State Medicaid program or to purchase coverage through the Federal Insurance Marketplace.  Navigators are licensed by the State Department of Insurance.  They are prohibited from taking payment for their services and adhere to a strict confidentiality policy to protect an applicant’s health and personal information.

Pace Community Action Agency established a Health Insurance Navigator program in 2014 to provide assistance in Knox, Daviess and Vigo Counties. Now, through a partnership with Covering Kids and Families; PACE has expanded the navigator program into Greene County. 

The primary duty of a health insurance navigator is to facilitate the enrollment or application process.  Navigators also provide application follow up and tracking, they help in resolving problems with a health plan or application denial, and they educate the newly insured on how to use their insurance and access health care.   Navigators also provide public education about different qualified health plans and Medicaid programs. 

Reba Driskill, Pace Navigator stated, “The process of applying for coverage on the Federal Marketplace and the State Medicaid program can be intimidating, the terminology can be difficult to understand and the need for Health Insurance Navigators has never been greater.” 

A Pace Health Insurance Navigator is available Monday thru Friday, 8 am to 5 pm to answer questions or to provide assistance.  Call (812) 890-2322 in Knox and Greene County or (812) 254-6936 in Daviess County to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcomed and telephone applications are available.
