Pace WIC Now Issuing Electronic Benefit Transfer Cards

Knox and Daviess County WIC began issuing Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards starting on August 15, 2016 for the purchase of WIC benefits.

EBT improves the WIC experience for participants and authorized retailers by:

  • Allowing participants to buy as many or as few of their authorized foods they want each shopping trip. (The former ‘checks’ required all items to be purchased at once or be forfeited.)
  • Providing a receipt showing remaining benefits for the month at the end of each transaction.
  • Creating an easier checkout process for cashiers and customers.

Indiana WIC Director, Eldon Whetstone, stated, “EBT represents a tremendous step forward for the Indiana WIC Program.  WIC participants will no longer have to use multiple paper checks in grocery store checkout lanes, and they will be able to shop for benefits as they need them instead of being limited to what is on a specific check.”

Kathy Nippert, Pace’s WIC Manager said, “When WIC participants return to the clinic after redeeming their current WIC checks, they will be issued their new EBT cards for all future benefits.”  Allowable WIC Foods and 30-day redemption dates will remain the same.

The WIC Program provides nutritious foods, nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support, and health referrals to pregnant, nursing or postpartum women, infants and children to age five. Participation in WIC helps families improve their nutrition and health behaviors, resulting in healthier pregnancies, healthier birth outcomes, better growth and development of young children, and improved health status.

The WIC Program is currently taking appointments for new clients. For more information contact the Pace WIC Clinics: Vincennes, 715 Wabash Avenue, 886-0107;     Washington, 2 Northeast 21st Street, 254-0002 ext. 3.
