World Breastfeeding Week – August 1-7, 2011
Talk To Me! Breastfeeding a 3D Experienceis the theme for this year’s World Breastfeeding Week.
Kathy Nippert, WIC Manager, announces that the Pace Community Action Agency – WIC Program, will be participating in World Breastfeeding Week during the first week of August. During this time, Breastfeeding is Best yard signs will be posted at Pace locations and throughout the community. Also, WIC moms who are or have ever breastfed will be encouraged to complete the following statement, “The best part of breastfeeding was…” Responses will be posted in the WIC waiting rooms and anyone who has ever been on WIC and breastfed is welcome to come in and add their comments. “Time spent with my baby” was the number one comment in 2010.
Usually when people think about breastfeeding they think about two-dimensions: time (pregnancy through weaning) and place. For breastfeeding to be effective there is a third-dimension: Communication. This involves communication with families, health care, and the community.
Exclusive breastfeeding from the first hours after birth through six month and continuing for the first year helps reduce malnutrition and prevent obesity in infants throughout the world. Breastfeeding gives all children an equal start regardless of family economical status or living conditions. Worldwide child mortality would be reduced by 13-20%, if infants were immediately placed skin-to-skin, exclusively breastfed for six months and breastfeeding was continued for at least 2 years. Early initiation of breastfeeding can help protect the mother’s health by reducing the risk of anemia, breast and ovarian cancer, and diabetes. Helping with weight management and their reproductive lives are additional benefits to mothers who breastfeed.
The Pace WIC Program helps moms achieve breastfeeding goals by providing breastfeeding education and support by Certified Lactation Specialists, Nurses, Dietitians, Breastfeeding Peer Counselors and 2 IBCLC (International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners) staff. WIC also has available loaner electric breast pumps to help moms through breastfeeding problems and maintain breastfeeding after returning to work or school. WIC breastfeeding food packages are designed to provide the largest amounts of food to moms who are exclusively breastfeeding, to help ensure maximum nutrition to the infant.
Please join Pace WIC in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week by communicating to friends, family, health care providers, employers and the community your support for feeding the natural way – Breastfeeding.
