WIC Announces 2012 Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program

5/16/2012

The start of the 2012 WIC Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program season is June 1st.  This program provides checks for WIC participants to receive fresh vegetables from approved farmers’ market vendors.  Each Knox County WIC household with a participant at least 12 months old by October 1, 2012 will be eligible for one set of checks. Each set of checks is worth $18.00 and may be redeemed from June 18th through October 20th.   Farmer’s market checks may be redeemed at vendors displaying the Indiana WIC Farmers Market Poster.

The Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) was implemented in 1992 to help local farmers develop more local patrons for their locally grown produce and to provide more fresh, unprepared  produce for WIC and Senior participants.   WIC participants also receiving SNAP benefits will also be able to redeem their SNAP benefits at the Farmer’s Market of Historic Vincennes which opens Saturday, May 26.

In addition to the Farmer’s Market checks, each WIC Participant over 12 months old receives vouchers for fresh and frozen produce from WIC grocery vendors.  The increase in the availability of fresh produce promotes healthy lifestyles and fights childhood obesity.

The WIC Program is currently taking appointments for new customers. For more information contact the Pace WIC Clinics: Vincennes, 715 Wabash Avenue, 886-0107; Washington, 2 Northeast 21st Street, 254-0002 ext. 3; Bicknell, 309 West 3rd Street, 735-3040.
