National STD Awareness is Observed in April

Pace Community Action Agency, Inc. along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recognizes April as STD Awareness Month. This is an annual observance to raise awareness about the impact of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) on the health of Americans and the importance of individuals discussing sexual health with their healthcare providers and, if sexually active, their partners.

The CDC estimates that there are 19 million new STDs diagnosed each year. STDs are common among all groups and affect men and women of all backgrounds and economic levels.  Approximately half of all new STDs occur in 15-24 year olds. Because many STDs have no symptoms, those at risk need to get tested and find out if they are infected.

Pam Jackson, RN, Health Educator for Pace Health Connection says, “It is important to increase the public’s knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases and make STD testing a part of routine medical care.”  Prevention, the best hope for reducing or eliminating STDs, begins with education.  Pace’s Health Connection provides educational information to individuals and groups about abstinence as well as safer sex practices and STDs. Audiences are encouraged to be responsible in the choices they make regarding their sexual health. Safer sex includes using condoms consistently and correctly, as well as being in a mutually monogamous relationship.

Health Connection of Pace Community Action Agency, Inc. encourages awareness, the prevention, and education about STDs. For more information about STD awareness or to make an appointment, call (812) 882-6069.
