Community Education Available
Multiple schools, agencies, and institutions in Knox, Daviess, and Vigo Counties utilize Health Connection’s tailored educational services to inform the community about a variety of subjects. The educational opportunities are available to individuals and groups. Participating in community health fairs is another avenue in which Health Connection provides educational services to the public. Since January, over 50 presentations have been provided to over 2,400 students and adults.
Health Connection of Pace Community Action Agency believes community education is essential to improving lives and raising health awareness. Pam Jackson, RN and Health Educator for Health Connection states, “As the Health Educator, my focus is to educate the community on a range of topics through a variety of venues.” A number of educational programs are available through Health Connection. The two most frequently presented programs are sexually transmitted infections and birth control methods.
In the United States each year, nearly nineteen million new cases of sexually transmitted infections occur. It is estimated that half of these new cases happen among young male and females ages 15-24. Many sexually transmitted infections are preventable and/or curable but if left undiagnosed and untreated (if there is a treatment) can lead to lifelong health problems, including infertility. Unfortunately, symptoms are not always obvious and the person who contracts an infection may be unaware that they and their partner(s) are at risk. With these numbers on the rise, increasing community education will enhance public awareness and hopefully decrease the rates of sexually transmitted infections. Accessible community education will allow for informed choices to be made.
