Kindergarten Readiness Goals
12/20/2011
As experts in the early childhood education field, Pace Head Start invites interested individuals to participate in a school readiness initiative. For the past 47 years Pace has provided comprehensive pre-school programming to children and families. In a continued commitment to ensure children in our community are entering kindergarten prepared, Pace has formed a school readiness committee comprised of school officials, public school teachers, principals, parents, health professionals, and other pre-school administrators.
The committee’s focus is to set clear school readiness goals for children and to discuss ways to ensure children are meeting the goals to be fully prepared for kindergarten. After meetings and discussions with committee members, school readiness goals have been set based upon Indiana State Education Foundations, Head Start Early Learning Framework, and input from local schools. Angie Lange, Pace Program Coordinator, said, “The committee created 11 goals based on 6 domains. Some of the goals include: pretending to read and recognizing letters within the child’s name, recognizing basic shapes and colors, and participating cooperatively with others.”
We understand that investing in early childhood education is essential to the future success of a child. Economist James Heckman estimates that early childhood education programs can show a 10% per year return on investment based on school and career achievement and reduced costs for remediation.
