Health Connection Promotes Breast Cancer Awareness

10/18/2011

Breast Cancer Awareness is observed during the month of October. This national campaign is dedicated to educating women regarding breast health and increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer. Health Connection, of Pace Community Action Agency, encourages women to take control of their own breast health by practicing regular self-breast exams, scheduling a clinical breast exam starting at age 20, and scheduling an annual mammogram starting at age 40.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer, and it is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. An estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year with an estimated 40,170 women expected to die from this disease. Today, there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.

Health Connection provides proactive reproductive health care services for men and women; community education, counseling and referrals. To promote breast health awareness, self-breast exam shower cards are available free to the public at Health Connection.
