Pace’s Health Connection Promotes Safe Choices

National Condom Week is February 14–21. Thisis a national observation intended to educate consumers, patients, students, and professionals about the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and teenage pregnancies, and also to promote and encourage safer sex by using condoms.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 19 million new STIs occur each year, with almost half of them among young people ages 15 to 24. Sexually transmitted Infections affect men and women of all backgrounds and economic levels. In the United States, almost half of all pregnancies are unintended and 30% of females become pregnant by the age of 20.

Health Connection of Pace Community Action Agency, Inc. encourages abstinence from sexual activity and provides education regarding safer sex practices for those who choose to be sexually active. Safer sex means taking precautions prior to sexual activity that can help to prevent anyone from getting an STI, or from giving an STI to a partner. The three most effective ways to avoid sexual transmission of STIs are (1) to abstain from all sexual activity; (2) to be in a long-term, mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who does not have an STI; and (3) to use condoms consistently and correctly.
